A couple of recent items have appeared in the news that show the priority IT leaders are placing on managing Big Data in their enterprise. The first was Gartner’s Group release of their top tend trends for 2012. Right along with tablet and cloud computing is Big Data management. Gartner’s analysis, along with others like McKinsey, clearly show that Big Data is not something isolated to the Facebook’s and Google’s of the world, but rather is something facing every company – large or small – that wants to compete well in their chosen market and use data as a strategic asset.
Another indicator was an informal study done by InformationWeek that asked CIO’s their top priorities for the coming year. Right near the top was the desire to harness the power of Big Data.
One other sign that shows Big Data is going to be “big” in 2012 was an article in InfoWorld that gave pointers to IT professionals who will need to make the right technology choices to properly manage Big Data in their environment.
This ability will be critical because nearly all industry analysts have stated that traditional RDBMS technology is not the right choice for managing Big Data. For, example, an IDC study defines Big Data technology as the following:
“Big data technologies describe a new generation of technologies and architectures, designed to economically extract value from very large volumes of a wide variety of data, by enabling high-velocity capture, discovery, and/or analysis.”
