Yes. It is recommended that you install the agents. I do not have a full list but there are a few things OpsCenter needs agents to determine:

* cassandra version
* performance data
* datacenter/rack information
* Run commands like compact/flush/decommission/etc

There are other things as well that the agents are needed for.

Thanks Nick for your information! So as long as Thrift port is open, Opscenter can perform well, even without agents. Is there any additional motivation to have agent seperately? For example, is there any information that only agent can report and cannot be obtained by opscenter thru Trift port?

OpsCenter uses thrift to get a view of the cluster and data in the cluster. This means it can be installed anywhere and as long as the thrift port is available in can gather that information. OpsCenter does need to install agents in order to get some information such as performance metrics for example.

After I start up the OPSCenter,(no agent was installed), I was able to see the whole cluster and all data, CF etc.

I am just curious, why do we need to install agent on the Cassandra nodes? What functionality would be missed if no agent is deployed?

p.s., I install opscenter on one of the cassandra nodes. Is this the reason why I don't need agent to see the cluster info.?

Thanks!
