Hi Pearly, I don't think it was mentioned here, but I did find out that it is not currently possible without duplicating the column and indexing it two different ways.

I had the same question that jkusar asked in this thread. That's to have the secondary index and solr index on the same column. Reading this thread, I could not find where the original question landed up. So is it possible to have both secondary index and Solr indexing on the same column.

Is that different than normal Solr? In my past experience with Solr, sending a commit message to Solr is asynchronous. It begins the commit right away, but it's still possible to do a search that doesn't include the new docs.

It was pointed out to me that if there was a way to optionally guarantee that SOLR had indexed a document and made it available for searching before returning from the CQL statement, then that would give me my guarantee and I could just do everything via SOLR.

Any chance of this being implemented?

Also, if the secondary index exists before the field is added to the solr schema, then solr is unable to index the field.

Is the solution just to run separate solr and cassandra nodes? We were attempting to avoid that if possible as it's not a requirement for us in order to handle load and just doubles the amount of hardware we need to buy and maintain. Even if that is the solution, won't the secondary indexes just replicate to the search nodes anyways along with the rest of the schema changes preventing solr from indexing the fields?

Currently working with the wikipedia demo. I'm trying to have a column both indexed into solr and available for search via a normal cassandra secondary index. All of this is running on the same search node.

When I try to create the secondary index, I get a message that the index already exists. It looks like it was created as part of the solr index. However, if I try query it like I would a secondary index, I get an error in the log stating "Solr search queries only supported on the 'solr_query' field".

A little background: there are certain cases in our application where "near real-time" isn't fast enough. We need certain pieces of data to be available within the system immediately, and so a secondary index is needed so that we can look them up right away without having to wait for Solr to finish committing the changes.
