Cassandra 1.1.6 throws error while starting ...

Hi There,
I installed Cassandra 1.1.6 on my Windows 7 laptop using through Cygwin.
It used to work before. But after I did a restart it stopped working.
The same installation on my office Windows 7 laptop gives the same exception from day 1.

While trying to start Cassandra it's throwing below error:

$ cassandra
cygwin warning:

Technically, the tarball version of DataStax Community Server is not supported on Windows/Cygwin.

Check here for a list of supported OSes:
http://www.datastax.com/download/community

Have you tried the MSI Installer version? I just tried it on Windows 7 and it works fine.

Don't know what else to do here.
Technically this should be a classpath error but I don't know where to fix it.
It was working on my home laptop before and then when I restarted it just stopped working.

- What version of cygwin are you using (has that changed between attempts)?
- What is your CLASSPATH?
- Are you starting cassandra from the cygwin shell using cassandra, or from a dos shell using cassandra.bat?

In whatever script you use, see about adding an echo of the CLASSPATH right before the jvm gets actually started.

1. I didn't change Cygwin version between attempts. I first installed Cygwin and then Cassandra.

Now I think this C; is giving this problem and I don't know how to fix this.
The classpath should be like /cygwin/c/ in unix style. I tried to change this line
in cassandra.sh but that didn't help too.

The problem is definitely with Cygwin classpath.
I could start Cassandra from DOS and connected to it also.

Great, glad it at least works from the windows prompt. If you would be so kind to print the CLASSPATH before the cygpath conversion as well.

The resulting CLASSPATH can not be -u, as the jvm is not aware of cygwin's special style of doing paths.

And yes, the C; in there would indicate an issue in the path conversion. You could use -m instead of -w, which will cause windows style but with forward slashes (more cygwin friendly that way). Sorry, I don't have a valid cygwin setup handy right now to try (but if you get me the original CLASSPATH, we may see why you end up with the C;).

Is the above from the batch file or the shell script? I was hoping for the CLASSPATH from the shell bash script right before the cygwin conversion (mostly to see if there is anything funky in there that may throw off cygpath). I agree, the extra C; components are strange and likely part of the problem.

Please also put an echo $include in front of the . "$include" statement in the cassandra script. I am curious which config file is read (it should be ./cassandra.in.sh. That is where the CLASSPATH is composed, so it seems like there is something strange going on in there.

This is from my laptop where it worked for the first time and now I see C; suddenly.
Include is the same which you stated earlier.

So that seems wrong to me. Is CLASSPATH already set on your system? Or are CASSANDRA_HOME or CASSANDRA_CONF? In your cygwin shell, type 'env | sort' and see if ay of those show up.

Here is a customized version of the .in file (instead of me making you tweak it one by one :-).

Should I replace the "..\DataStaxCommunityEdition\apache-cassandra\tools\bin\cassandra.in.sh" with your content and then run cassandra.bat?

Just save the file to any filename and run it as a shell script by itself. It will just print out what it discovers as it builds the CLASSPATH variable.
