   Hi everyone,

   I am going to make a presentation this Friday about DataStax Enterprise, Apache Cassandra, and the paper "Why NOSQL?".

   but till now I have some questions :

   1. I read that DataStax is the "commercial" company behind Cassandra.

   what does it mean "commercial company", while cassandra is a free product?

   2. What is Apache Cassandra, and who created it?

   Datastax provides support, and you pay for it.
   It's like mysql, redhat or any open source product: you can use, but you need to pay to get support.
   That's all I guess.

   monmel,

   While our DataStax Enterprise platform is free to download and use in development environments, we do require a contract to use it in production, hence the commercial aspect. It is indeed based on Apache Cassandra, but also includes much more: http://www.datastax.com/products/enterprise

   You should be able to find any information you need about Apache Cassandra here: http://wiki.apache.org/cassandra/
