dse service won't start - exit with return value 3

Hi - I'm getting errors starting the dse service with solr from the init script, but everything works fine if I just run the /usr/bin/dse script directly.

Ubuntu 10.04
DSE 2.1:
java version "1.6.0_24"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.11.4) (6b24-1.11.4-1ubuntu0.10.04.1)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.0-b12, mixed mode)

This works:
sudo dse cassandra -s
This doesn't:
sudo service dse start

From /var/log/cassandra/output.log:

log4j:ERROR setFile(null,true) call failed.

Sorry for the late response, did yo figure this out?

If not, my suggestion would be to see who the owner of /var/log/cassandra and the files in that location is. If you run cassandra as a service, it will do that as user cassandra, so if that user doesn't have write access to /var/log/cassandra (or the files in there) you will get a permission error.

You could run:

chown -R cassandra /var/log/cassandra

which should allow the process to write there when it is run as user cassandra.

I am using Dse 3.0,Solr 4.1, and cassandra 1.2.2.
Here i have successfully intstalled all of above.In which solr and cassandra is working very well but unfortunatilly dse is giving error.

when i run following cvommand :-- "/dse-3.0/bin$ sudo ./dse cassandra -s"

I get follwoing error :--

I don't quite understand what you're trying to do. DSE 3.0 includes Solr 4.0 and Cassandra 1.1.9, you don't need to install Solr & Cassandra separately.

The error you're seeing indicates that the DSE installation is not correct, as the main DSE classes are missing from the classpath. How did you install it?

After it i am following this link to run demo wikipedia...

where is my mistake.Please help me......

If i should be fresh installation of DSE 3.0 please guide me the correct process to uninstall & install it on ubuntu and most important should i uninstall cassandra and solr before install of DSE 3.0.

Did you run "./1-add-schema" before "./2-index.sh -- wikifile wikipedia-sample.bz2" ?

If so, can you run it again and copy the output here?

The first command should create the Solr index & Cassandra column family, and is failing which is why you're unable to run the second command, which submits the data to be indexed & stored.

It looks as though the DSE node is not starting up with search functionality enabled. Documentation to help with this is available here: http://www.datastax.com/docs/datastax_enterprise3.0/reference/start_stop_dse#start-dse

If you installed using the debian package, you'll need to edit /etc/default/dse as described in the section "Starting DataStax Enterprise as a service"

Many many thanks for your support.
Today i follow your link.Edit /etc/default/dse "SOLAR ENABLED=1".
Again i run thiese commands successfully:--
---->sudo service dse start.
---->nodetool ring -h localhost.
It gives output:-- solr up.
---->In other shell
----->cd /usr/share/dse-demos/wikipedia.
----->./1-add-schema.sh
output---
SUCCESS
