I don't know what you mean. (speculation below follows)
The error is 404, which indicates that the JSON Update Request Handler is not working, or is not being routed to correctly from /update/json.
What in the Solr 4.0 example helps diagnose this?
If you're suggesting that I should be using the /update endpoint and set the Content-Type:application/json then I did try that, and I have never seen that work. That endpoint is mapped to an XML request handler per the wikipedia demo solrconfig.xml.

We have fixes for both problems that will be in a future release. The good news is that they both have simple workarounds for right now.
1. To use the /update/json request handler, simply insert any character between the "j" and "s" of "json" in the request handler name, such as:
<requestHandler name="/update/j-son"
class="solr.JsonUpdateRequestHandler"
startup="lazy" />And then use that new name in your POST requests: /update/j-son.
2. To send any content type to the standard Solr /update handler, simply remove the "Xml" at the beginning of the request handler class name:
<requestHandler name="/update"
class="solr.UpdateRequestHandler">The latter is actually the proper fix for the second problem.
