Regarding your previous post, there are quite a few symlinks in various folder, so just recreating the ones in that directory won't be enough.
My only guess right now is that the tarball you downloaded was corrupted somehow. Can you re-download and try again? Here is the output from a brand new Ubuntu 10.04 instance that I just created on ec2:
