Can I still use the sstable2json as alternative to snapshotting for making backups?
The sstable2json was defined as such tool in older manual:

but this definition is not longer in the manual for using sstable2json (version 1.0) on

The main reason for removing the definition as a backup tool is that snapshots are the recommended way at this point as described in http://www.datastax.com/docs/1.1/operations/backup_restore.
There is also a note that starting with version 0.7, json2sstable and sstable2json must be run in such a way that the schema can be loaded from system tables. This means that cassandra.yaml must be found in the classpath and refer to valid storage directories. If that doesn't affect you, then you should be able to continue what you are doing.
As with all backup methods, the best practice is to actually try that it works (so do a backup and restore it somewhere else).
