NodeSync: Repair You Forget About

NodeSync was introduced in DataStax Enterprise 6 as an alternative to the so-called "anti-antropy" repair of Apache Cassandra. In this presentation, we'll explain what problems it solves, how it solves them, and give enough insights to use the feature productively. We'll also discuss planned and upcoming improvements to NodeSync, such as incremental mode.

Diving into an Era of Unmanned Audits

Besides legal obligations, log collection presents a multitude of challenges from integrity and availability of the mechanism to the availability and performance of customer service delivery. DataStax platform encouraged management to buy-in to open source and deliver solutions to the constraints of our high throughput, highly varied data in a complex infrastructure supporting 140+ credit bureau products.

Tripling Performance by Using Thread per Core with DataStax Enterprise

In this talk we’ll explore migrating a 10TB Oracle Rack to a DataStax Enterprise cluster. During this process, many data models were considered including tables per year and whether to store table data as a wide column or BLOB (serialized by avro pojo). After upgrading to DSE 6.0 we updated our data models to leverage the new Thread Per Core architecture resulting in a triple performance increase from previous models by querying different shards.

Doing a Large-Scale Data Migration Without Downtime and During Regular Business Hours

As a lead software developer at Siemens, I was tasked to move billions of records from MySQL to Apache Cassandra™ and change all of the associated legacy logic to boot. This session will cover all the maneuvers I performed to turn a potential “hair on fire, run around screaming apocalypse” into a reasonably sane, gradual progression – albeit not an easy one.

DataStax Enterprise Security, Build Automation, and Operations at Discover Financial Services

As part of its transformation, including migrating apps to the cloud, Discover Financial Services (DFS) has been exploring solutions using DataStax Enterprise (DSE). In the session Kiran Dronamraju, Principal Engineer and Product Owner for Cloud Data Solutions at DFS, will discuss the DataStax footprint at DFS with a focus on a three-part, secure-fast-reliable concept: Secure: all aspects of access, including shell, user, and transport security Fast: build automation/IaC (Infrastructure-as-Code) for DSE clusters Reliable: DSE’s fault-tolerant architecture and applications We’ll also discuss the operational aspects of the implementation, including monitoring and alerting, before wrapping up the session with a short discussion on upcoming projects.

Capacity Planning Using Facebook Prophet

"When will my server run out of resources?" This is a question on the minds of many experienced database administrators. This is particularly relevant in Cassandra given that, as data grows, compactions get triggered to keep the database healthy. Compactions cause a temporary spike in disk usage and disk I/O while old and new SSTables coexist, and organizations can get caught off guard with a saturated cluster that becomes tricky to expand and unable to respond effectively to user requests. In this talk we describe how we use Prophet, Facebook's open source project, at Pythian to perform historical trend analysis on relevant Cassandra metrics, and predict the future trends of Cassandra resources, considering seasonality and holiday effects. This allows us to grow clusters in a proactive way, helping companies reduce costs and improve availability.

Always Test Your Cassandra Cluster! In Production!

Adobe Audience Manager we run Cassandra at scale—over 500 nodes in tens of clusters that serve over 150B requests every day. To upgrade and test such infrastructure, the team developed an active/passive procedure that allows safe testing in production. So, all at once, we upgraded: Cassandra, hardware, OS, JVM, VNodes, and a few more. What could go wrong after all? Well... ALL of them.

Metrics for the Masses: When Cassandra Becomes Popular in Your Company

Since starting with Cassandra in 2014, we’ve grown to 150+ teams using our internal keyspace-as-a-service offering with 1,000+ tables in production, largely in a multi-tenant environment. Keeping track of the metrics that Cassandra exposes became a large operational challenge, but critically important when dealing with multi-tenant clusters. We'll discuss some of the challenges we’ve faced when providing keyspaces-as-a-service, particularly focused around the importance of metrics with multi-tenant clusters and the associated challenges with collecting, storing, and displaying the metrics.

Automating Cassandra Administration with the DataStax OpsCenter API

Provisioning, configuration, patching, and deployment are complex in distributed systems like Cassandra. At Surescripts, we use Ansible as our enterprise deployment tool. The DataStax OpsCenter API integrates easily with the Ansible URI module. We found the OpsCenter API to be complete and well-documented and use it extensively. I'll detail our use of the API for automating a common task.

Automation for Cassandra Scaling and Node Replacement

With vnodes scaling up is easy. However, adding/removing multiple nodes in multiple clusters is cumbersome. Another such issue is node replacement due to hardware failures. I'll discuss why more automation is better, I'll present various ideas about how to do this, and how I installed and used AWX (Ansible Tower) at Adobe to manage 30 Cassandra clusters of around 600 nodes.

Get Better Operation Insights on DataStax Enterprise Clusters

With today's complex applications, sending DataStax Enterprise (DSE) diagnostic data to a centralized, scalable, and flexible monitoring solution is critical for providing fast and accurate problem resolution. In this talk, we'll explain what we are doing at DataStax to help you monitor your DSE clusters at scale. We'll also preview a brand new solution that provides insights such as health checks and diagnostics.
